I had a productive one hour walk before dusk along the Springbrook Trail in Renton today. I was surprised to find an early (or wintering?) female WILSON'S WARBLER doing what "willies" are best known for - actively bouncing around and fidgeting. She was in a blackberry tangle near where the trail starts at the south end, responding to my pishing, and calling with that squeaky call note of hers. Also, there was a "COMMON" TEAL at the big bend in the river, loafing and swimming with carolinensis Green-winged Teal. This is presumably the same bird that has been wintering here the last several years. And finally, nearby, was a nearly pure NORTHERN ("YELLOW-SHAFTED") FLICKER. It had two black "whiskers", but the crown color was brown and its tail and flight feather shafts were more of a darker, orangey-yellow. The GREAT BLUE HERON nests were empty (as they were last year), but there was a large congregation of approximately 35 GBHE's not too far away.
