To prepare to bird Kauai, I would suggest purchasing "Enjoying Birds in
Hawaii" by H. Douglas Pratt. It is a first-rate site guide covering all the
major Hawaiian Islands. For the birds themselves, there is a small
pocket-sized book "Hawaii's Birds" published by the Hawaii Audubon Society
that is a good start. For complete coverage of all the birds however, you
will need to spring for "The Birds of Hawaii and the Tropical Pacific",
again by Pratt. I have heard good things about bird guiding from Terran
Tours, they advertise in "Birding" magazine. The books are available from
American Birding Association at
