Subject: Hybrid scaup/ringneck

There has been a strange duck across from the Nestle plant on Carnation
farms Road. It has a bill pattern much like a RNDU on the bill, but it is
less distinct than I am accustomed to. In addition, it has a large white
area at the base of the bill (like a female scaup). The head does not have
the eye ring of a female ring neck, and lacks the thin line behind the eye
(I realize this is not always present on a female ring neck) and the lighter
patch around the eye. The head profile is more scaup-like (rounded). I
have seen it hanging out with a male ring-neck at times. Does this sound
like a possible hybrid? Do these ducks often hybridize?
Thanks,
