Gentlemen and Tweeters,

There is, indeed, both a Pale Chanting Goshawk and Dark Chanting Goshawk on
the African continent. When in South Africa in 1998, I saw the Pale
Chanting Goshawk (Melierax canorus) several times. It is a resident mainly
of thornbush habitats, such as the Kalahari and other open areas. It does
have quite a melodious song. I've never seen the other species, the Dark
Chanting Goshawk (Melierx metabates), as it is found much to the north of
South Africa. It is more a broadleafed woodland and mixed bushveld species.

Quite frankly, I think it is quite a nice name for a very attractive raptor.

Cheers, Diann
