Today with great sadness I read in the Jan-Feb issue of
National/International Wildlife Magazine that another bird species has
joined three others, I had the privilege of knowing in my former work,
into the mists of extinction. In Hawaii alone 9 others have a population
of less than 20. Sigh! Exinction is so final. Much of it caused by
mankind's thoughtless and callous actions. In the latest case by the
introduction of an another exotic predator, the Brown Tree (or Rat)
Snake to Guam. It is a matter of time when the snake gets established
here. What others may follow?.

Most , but not all, Mainland birders give no thought to endangerment of
species, but are just interested in chalking up another bird on their
weekly, monthly, yearly or life list and do nothing for the welfare of
wildlife. Harsh words but true.

Another article in the magazine concerns the population explosion of
humans from 5 billion to 6 billion in 12 years. At this rate it will
reach 7 billion in less than another 15 years - if not sooner. Should be
food for thought.

Read the issue in the local library or purchase it.
