Columbia Estuary Report - 02/27/2000

RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS were reported from Neahkahnie, Seaside and
Astoria this week. A bright male moved into my holly tree
Saturday morning and appears to be on territory.

Another wave of TREE SWALLOWS moved through this week. The most
notable concentration was at Sunset Lake. The shorebird count
from Sunset Access to Gearhart approach produced 920 SANDERLING
and 2 DUNLIN. A flock of about 500 DUNLIN was at Youngs Bay.

Todd Thornton found 2 WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS in the sparrow
flock at Aldrich Point, Brownsmead.

A flock of 109 gulls were hanging out at the point at the end of
the Hammond Boat Basin waiting for church to get out (that's when
the folks with the Wonder Bread arrive). A count follows:

Thayer's Gull 2
Western Gull 61
Glaucous-winged Gull 9
West x G-w Gull 37

One of the Thayers was a 3rd winter birds the other a second
winter. There was and even mix of age classes among the
others.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
