I did my first walk of the new year in the Lake Hills Greenbelt of Bellevue
and was rewarded by a Pileated Woodpecker. It flew over squawking and landed
in a nearby tree for a good look. A great way to start the new year. I guess
my highlight bird for the U.S. in 1999 would be the Red-cockaded Woodpecker
seen in Florida during a field trip at the ABA Conference in Ft. Myers in
Jan. Also had a number of special birds on a trip to Trinidad & Tobago in Nov.

For the year 1999, I had 96 species in the LHG with four new species that
were firsts since I started recording in 1989. A Common Loon and Red-necked
Grebe on Phantom Lake, a Western Kingbird, and a Barn Owl. The LHG total is
now 125.
