January 1, 2000, Saturday, 9:48 a.m. Hello, this is Kraig Kemper, (206)
789-9255, reporting for January 1. After a brisk walk around Green Lake,
returning home Kathy Kemper and I observed one MERLIN at the northeast
corner of North 75th and Daytona North. Thank you.

January 1, 2000, Saturday, 5:31 p.m. Hi, this is Steven Mlodinow. Today
Jim Flynn, Dennis Duffey, Steve Pink, Connie Manreca, Casey Beechel and I
went up and birded around the Samish Flats in the morning looking mostly for
the EURASIAN KESTREL with no success. Did have a GLAUCOUS GULL along Darcy
Road. Also, at the northeast corner of Camano Island at the end of Smith
Road, we had four WHITE-THROATED SPARROWS and the end of the day on Eide
Road, we had 3 or 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS and that's it. Good luck and good

January 1, 2000, Saturday, 10:50 p.m. Hello, this is Richard Rowlett, (425)
865-0276, reporting here from a fabulously successful New Year's Day trip
today over to Chelan to see the NORTHERN HAWK OWL. For me, the very first
bird of the new year, century and millenium. The bird was in continuous
view this morning between 7 and 9 a.m. Here follows explicit directions to
this bird: DeLorme, page 83, A-8, Township 28 North, Range 22 East, NE
Corner of Section 27. From Chelan town center, intersection Routes
Alternate 97 and 150, which is also Saunders Street and Woodin Avenue. Take
Route 150, following the dog leg exactly through town for 2.1 miles, turn
right on Boyd Road, follow Boyd Road for 2.6 miles to Purtteman Gulch Road,
turn right on Purtteman and go 1.2 miles to where you should see orange tape
on both sides of the road. This is the place and the OWL range is here
between the black mailbox marked number 91 DG Road on the left, and the next
house up the road on the right 500 meters or so. Right now it's a pretty
easy find and worth the effort. More details can be read at the Tweeters

January 2, 2000, Sunday, 6:53 a.m. Hello, this is Dave Beaudette at (206)
365-2083. This report is for January the 1st and Edmonds in Snohomish
County at the Deer Creek Hatchery. Along Deer Creek was heard a single
SWAMP SPARROW and a short distance from the hatchery in the field just
southwest of the intersection of Nootka Road and Pine Street were two male
ANNA'S HUMMINGBIRDS. One of these males was singing and displaying. Good
birding.

January 2, 2000, Sunday, 3:24 p.m. Good day. Steven Mlodinow. Took a walk
today near the Everett Sewage Ponds. Had a SWAMP SPARROW. To get there,
walk like you're walking to Spencer Island. Just before the bridge to
Spencer Island, walk to your right down the paved trail. Take this trail a
fair distance, maybe half a mile, and you'll come to a bench on your right
side. A couple hundred feet past the bench on the right was where the SWAMP
SPARROW was with a number of SONG and FOX SPARROWS and other birds. Also,
there was an ORANGE-CROWNED WARBLER in this general vicinity. That's it.
