This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Dec 31 (1999). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

A PINE WARBLER, Idaho's first state record, is still visiting a feeder in
Moscow, Latah Co, ID. The bird has been present at the feeder of Bettie and
Ray Hoff, 907 East 7th Street, since Tue, Dec 7. The bird frequents a
feeder on the south side of the house. Look ffor it around the southeast
corner of 7th Street and Hayes. The Hoff's have also had a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW visiting their feeders. The Hoff's are happy to have birders visit
but if you are coming from a distance you might want to check ahead. Email
them at

Near Chelan, Chelan Co, WA on Dec 30 was a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL. The bird was
spotted by Meredith Spencer and Rick Hendrick on the Chelan CBC. The bird
was in an orchard up Purtteman Gulch Road, just past a mailbox labeled #91
PG Road. They hung orange flagging on the road. See WA DeLorme 83, A-8.

There are 2 great birds in Boise, Ada Co., ID. Both are firsts for Idaho. A
RUFF is residing below the lower dam at Lake Lowell on Deer Flat NWR near
Nampa. The bird was discovered on Dec 26 and has been easily seen every day
since you don't even need to get out of the car. See A Birders' Guide to
Idaho p 162. From I-84, take exit 35, go north to Karcher, west on Karcher
about 8 miles to Riverside Road, south on Riverside to the dam. Just before
crossing the dam, turn right onto the gravel road and then immediately left
onto the road that parallels the dam. Follow it to the large, concrete
channel. ID DeLorme 34, C-1.5. Also, a LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL is at the
Hidden Hollow Landfill in the Boise Foothills. It is more intermittant in
its appearances, but was still being seen this week. From ID 55 turn east
onto Hill Road and follow it to the well-marked road leading up to the
landfill. OR from State Street in Boise, head north on Gary Lane and then
turn west on Hill Road. ID DeLorme 34-35, BC on the crease.

An adult SNOWY OWL is southeast of Moses Lake, Grant Co WA according to
Mike and MerryLynn Denny. They saw the bird on Dec 29 near the intersection
of 4 SE and M SE, sitting along the concrete-lined irrigation ditches. WA
DeLorme 69, D-6.5.

Three TRUMPETER SWANS were just below Dry Falls Dam near Coulee City, Grant
Co WA on Dec 29 according to the Denny's. The dam is along US 2. Another 9
miles west along US 2, near the old white school house, the Denny's also
had a large flock of HORNED LARKS, with 5 SNOW BUNTINGS and 2 LAPLAND
LONGSPURS mixed in. WA DeLorme 85, CD-6.

And at the Walla Walla River Delta in western Walla Walla Co WA were 117
DUNLIN today, Dec 31, according to the Denny's. Access to the delta is the
pull-out across from the entrance to Madame Dorianne Park, just north of
the jct of US 730 and US 12 along US 12. WA DeLorme 40, D-1.
