Well, after work I hit the road to Chelan and got there around 6:00am. The
directions were great (thanks to everyone). It was still too dark so I got
out of the truck and heard a distant calling GREAT HORNED OWL. That always
gets me going!!! Anyways, at precisely 7:50am, 500ft after the famous
mailbox, sitting on one of those windmills in the orchard was that beautiful
NORTHERN HAWK OWL!! Wow, what an owl!! It doesn't stay still for very long.
It flew right over my head to the east side of the road and I beleive I took
a nice flight photograph. It landed on top of one of the Ponderosa's right
off of the road. What a sight!! The key to finding the bird is definately
catching it on the move because it blends in rather nicely with the tops of
those trees (as mentioned on an earlier post). I was all by myself out there
in that snowy environment with that owl and it was great (first and maybe
last N.H.O for me). I hit the road for Federal Way about 8:45am and it was
still perched right off of the road. We'll see how my pictures come out.
Blewett Pass wasn't a fun drive (I nearly lost it twice) so BE CAREFUL!!!
The bird seems to be very comfortable with this area so as long as you are
there early, early....you should see it. Have Fun!!! Bryan Mathews,
