This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Jan 7 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

A PINE WARBLER, Idaho's first state record, is still visiting a feeder in
Moscow, Latah Co, ID. The bird has been present at the feeder of Bettie and
Ray Hoff, 907 East 7th Street, since Tue, Dec 7. The bird frequents a
feeder on the south side of the house. Look for it around the southeast
corner of 7th Street and Hayes. The Hoff's have also had a WHITE-THROATED
SPARROW visiting their feeders. The Hoff's are happy to have birders visit
but if you are coming from a distance you might want to check ahead. Email
them at

Near Chelan, Chelan Co, WA on Dec 30 was a NORTHERN HAWK-OWL. The bird was
spotted by Meredith Spencer and Rick Hendrick on the Chelan CBC. The bird
was in an orchard up Purtteman Gulch Road, just past a mailbox labeled #91
PG Road. They hung orange flagging on the road. The bird has been seen on
and off all week. A local couple, non-birders, can be contacted for updates
at djellis at nwi.net. See WA DeLorme 83, A-8.

An adult SNOWY OWL is southeast of Moses Lake, Grant Co WA according to
Mike and MerryLynn Denny. They saw the bird on Dec 29 near the intersection
of 4 SE and M SE, sitting along the concrete-lined irrigation ditches. WA
DeLorme 69, D-6.5.

Another WA SNOWY OWL was near Ellensburg, Kittitas Co, WA on Jan 5
according to Andy Stepniewski. Look for it 0.5 to 0.75 miles north of I-90
off exit 109 in the large hay field. It may be possible to see it from the
parking area in back of the Bar 14 Restaurant. WA DeLorme 50, A-4 and 66, D-4.

On the Rathdrum Prairie, NW of Coeur d'Alene, Kootenai Co ID on Sun Jan 2
were 4 SHORT-EARED OWLS. Two birds were near the intersection of Hayden and
Idaho streets; 2 more were at the airport according to Stephen Lindsay. Dr.
Lindsay also found 2 SNOW BUNTINGS in a flock of Horned Larks along
Lancaster Road between US 95 and Heutter Road today Jan 7. Lancaster Road
requires a 4-wheel drive. The birds are ranging around, so you may need to
look as far west as ID 41. ID DeLorme 60, AB-1.

Two EURASIAN WIGEONS are in the Lewiston, Nez Perce Co ID / Clarkston,
Asotin Co WA area. Both birds were spotted on the CBC on Sun. Both birds
were with American Wigeons at Kiwanis Park, which is the first parking area
south of the bridge over US 12 along Snake River Avenue. If you can't find
them there, check Swallows Park, just south of Clarkston along WA 129, and
check the ball fields just north of the US 12 bridge over the Clearwater
River in north Lewiston (transcribers note check along the greenbelt
behind Costco in Clarkston near the confluence). And, in the north end of
the north pond at Kiwanis Park was an adult BLACK-CROWNED NIGHT-HERON on
Jan 2, according to Charles Swift. ID DeLorme 54, A-1; WA DeLorme 43 AB-8
