January 4, 2000, Tuesday, 7:09 p.m. This is Rachel Lawson, (206) 282-5593.
Today, Tuesday, on the Samish Flats, I saw one GLAUCOUS GULL and one
NORTHERN SHRIKE. Both of these birds were on Sam Bell Road near its
intersection with Pulver Road. That's all. Good birding.

January 6, 2000, Thursday, 4:36 p.m. John O'Connell, Anacortes, (360)
299-4375. Today at 2:45 p.m., approximately .2 of a mile south of the
Samish Island Road/Bow-Edison junction, the EURASIAN KESTREL was observed
perched on the telephone poles. Thank you.

January 7, 2000, Friday, 10: 13 a.m. Hello, this is Wayne Weber from
Kamloops, B.C., phone number (250) 377-8865. Reporting on some birds seen
in the Samish Flats area yesterday December the 6th. I met John O'Connell
just shortly after he had seen the EURASIAN KESTREL, but unfortunately he
couldn't find it. However, I did see a PRAIRIE FALCON almost in the same
location sitting in a dirt clod just southeast of the intersection of Samish
Island Road and the Bayview Edison Road. In about 5 hours of birding in the
Samish Flats area, including the intersection of Sam Bell Road and Pulver
Road where the EURASIAN KESTREL had last been seen, I saw a total of about
10 RED-TAILED HAWKS, 2 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS, 3 HARRIERS, 2 SHORT-EARED OWLS, 4
BALD EAGLES, 2 AMERICAN KESTRELS, plus the PRAIRIE FALCON that I mentioned.
Other birds of a little bit of interest included an EURASIAN WIGEON with a
large flock of AMERICAN WIGEON and PINTAIL on Pulver Road near Highway 11, a
WESTERN SANDPIPER, possible 2 of them, in with a large flock of DUNLIN on
Sullivan Road and a VIRGINIA RAIL heard calling in a slough near the little
community of Blanchard, just north of Bow. That's it for now.

January 8, 2000, Saturday, 6:08 p.m. Yes, this John Karenschrader [sp?].
We're from Dayton, Ohio. We came up to see the EURASIAN KESTREL. Our
number is (937) 436-3664. We did see the EURASIAN KESTREL today about 12:30
p.m. It was in, uh, flying over the field that has long grass north of the
intersection of D'Arcy Road and Farm-to-Market Road in Samish Flats. Note
that there's also a pair of AMERICAN KESTRELS in this area as well, which we
saw all afternoon. We did not see the EURASIAN KESTREL for more than about
10 to 15 minutes at the most, but the other KESTREL pair hung out along
D'Arcy Road all afternoon. Also, all the other FALCON species were in the
area in the afternoon, although we did not see the GYRFALCON. It was
reported by other people that we ran into. Thank you.

January 8, 2000, Saturday, 6:34 p.m. Oh, hello, this is Steve Pink, phone
number (425) 649-0601. At Tacoma today, saw the SLATY-BACKED GULL. Took
quite a long time and saw it about 4:30 in the evening. It was by the
moorage [?garbled] on 11th Street, 11th and Portland, and if you go west on
Portland until the road ends, it's only about a quarter of a mile. There's
a car park on your right by the river, and the bird was on some tanks with a
whole lot of other birds, and a very dark back, indeed, you couldn't miss
it. Thanks and that's it. Good luck and good birding.

January 9, 2000, Sunday, 6:58 a.m. Hello, this is Kraig Kemper, (206)
789-9255, reporting for Saturday, January 8th, birding Skagit and Island
County. The only bird of note was one CLARK'S GREBE located on Cornet Bay,
east of Deception Pass State Park, in the water across the street from E.Q.
Harbor Service and Sales. Thank you.

January 9, 2000, Sunday, 10:10 a.m. Hi, this the Vancouver Bird Alert
calling. I have just received a message from Murray Brown, (604) 534-9219.
Yesterday, January 8th, he saw a MOUNTAIN BLUEBIRD on Samish Island. It was
flitting around on the beach in the lee of the wind and flitting from post
to post flycatching at beach level. The bird was very tame. Unfortunately
that's all the information I have. Hope it helps. Bye-bye.

January 9, 2000, Sunday, 4:31 p.m. Hello, this is Scott Atkinson with a
report for Saturday, the 8th of January. On the 8:40 run of the
Kingston-Edmonds ferry, I had a second winter GLAUCOUS GULL that actually
landed on the ferry and was otherwise flying around the underwater park
area. Also in the afternoon I had a ROCK SANDPIPER out at Ediz Hook.
That's all.
