For a brief time today, the biggest, most beautiful
snowflakes I've ever seen drifted over Fawn Lake. Snow fell
on cedars, firs, alders, and all the lively birds outside my
window.

Yesterday I watched a pied-billed grebe struggle with a
wriggling minnow; today a male common merganser tried hard
to get a grip on a 7" largemouth bass. Last night I looked
out at the feeder at 3:00 a.m. and saw a flying squirrel
feeding on sunflower seeds.

I like going to Texas and seeing birds I've never seen
before, or driving fast and hard to see a rare bird someone
listed on Tweeters. But what I really love is seeing the
behavior of birds at our feeders and on our lake. It is
such a wonderful way to keep in touch with nature.
