My wife and I attended the Audubon National Conference in Tucson in
1986, while there we spent two nights camping in the Chiracahua
Mountains. One of the mornings we awoke to strange calls coming from the
treetops at Rustler Park. We hurried out and found a small flock of
Thick-billed Parrots feeding on Douglas Fir cones, as if they were giant
crossbills. The forest fires that occurred in these mountains damaged a
considerable part of the habitat. And I believe these reintroduced birds
have disappeared again.
