Hello, Tweeters and Jim! We have many flickers around our yard (probably
about 5) but one that visits the suet feeder frequently is a male
"Yellow-shafted"X"Red-shafted" intergrade! Overall it looks a lot like a
"Red-shafted"; brown on cap and red mustache. But then I saw a distinctive
red "v" on it's nape! When the suet feeder spun around I got a good look at
very bright orange on the base of it's tail feathers. I think this flicker
has been around for quite a while and we just haven't noticed any real
significance. Has anyone seen one of these in Washington for a while? I heard
they interbred only in the Great Plains area. Also, there are now over 50 Red
Crossbills flying around our yard, in broken up groups. They come down for
water almost every day. Any comments? Good birding!
