Hello, this is the Audubon Society of Portland Rare Bird Report. This
recording was made Thursday January 20. If you have anything to add call
Harry Nehls at 233-3976.

The COMMON POCHARD and a TUFTED DUCK were seen during the week at the
Warrenton Sewage Ponds. Both are dull plumaged and are often difficult to
locate among the many scaup and other ducks.

Good numbers of SWAMP SPARROWS are wintering at Millicoma Marsh in Coos
Bay. Three COMMON YELLOWTHROATS are also being seen there.

On January 15 a TURKEY VULTURE was at the upper end of Yaquina Bay west
of Toledo. A TREE SWALLOW was south of Newport at Beaver Creek Marsh
January 17. A GOLDEN EAGLE and 28 BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were at
Brownsmead east of Astoria January 17.

On January 15 a GYRFALCON was observed at Woodland Bottoms Washington. A
RED-SHOULDERED HAWK, blue phase ROSS'S GOOSE, and two SWAMP SPARROWS were
at Ridgefield NWR. Up to 11 species of sparrows have been seen at the
sparrow hedges along Rentenaar Road on the east side of Sauvie Island.
The flock at the East Side Checking Station still contains a CLAY-COLORED
SPARROW and a HARRIS'S SPARROW as well as most of the other species. The
PALM WARBLER continues to be seen in North Portland along 33d Avenue,
north of Columbia Blvd.

A GREATER YELLOWLEGS was with a flock of DUNLIN and DOWITCHERS near Canby
January 17. A BARN SWALLOW was near Canby January 19.

On January 16 seven CINNAMON TEAL were at Jackson Bottoms in Hillsboro. A
NORTHERN SHRIKE was at the Fernhill Wetlands in Forest Grove, and a
CLARK'S GREBE was at Scoggins Valley Park south of Forest Grove the next
day.

A CATTLE EGRET has been seen all month northwest of Salem. Take Wallace
Road northwest from midtown Salem 2.5 miles, turning left on Michigan
City Lane. The bird is on the left along the lane. A TURKEY VULTURE was
west of Dallas January 16.

The BLACK DUCK continues to be seen at Hood River. COMMON REDPOLLS are
still being seen at Black Butte Ranch, near Bend, in Prineville, and at
Joseph. Flock of BOHEMIAN WAXWINGS are still at Joseph.

On January 15 a TREE SPARROW was at Miller Island WA, south of Klamath
Falls. Up to five RED-SHOULDERED HAWKS are wintering in the Klamath
Basin. On January 17 a huge flock of blackbirds was along Stateline Road
in the Lower Klamath NWR. The flock was made up of RED-WINGED,
TRICOLORED, and YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS.

Thats it for this week.
