I went out to Alki, Tuesday early afternoon, high tide, no little bb's
about, some pairs of scooters in the rough sea, high wind. The scooters
started to "raft up", mostly Surf Scooters with some White Wings. not much
else so I thought would REALLY watch them, it was very interesting, they
"rafted up", one would put it's head under( not like grebes who do the
little "hop up" and then dive) and duck( no pun) under the water, soon the
next one would follow and then the next etc, in a very smooth movement
they were all under the water. When they surfaced , they would look around
seeming)to make sure everyone was there, head themselves in the same
direction, and then continue the sychronized diving. This eventually came to
the attention of some of the gulls who had been hovering on the sea breezes,
and "landed?" near by "just in case".I am guessing the Scooters were
following a shoal of small fish? When they came up , some were swallowing
something.
