I birded Vancouver Lake and the River "S" Unit of the Ridgefield Refuge
on Jan. 23rd. At Vancouver Lake there was a RED-THROATED LOON in the
Columbia River offshore of Post Office Lake. The blue-phased ROSS' GOOSE
was in the flock of Canada Geese just North of Post Office Lake. At both
the Frenchman's Bar and the Ruefner's farm heron rookeries there were
GREAT EGRETS feeding with the Great Blue Herons. A NORTHERN SHRIKE was
in the trees beyond Vancouver Lake Park.
At the River "S" Unit of the Ridgefield Refuge there was a constant
parade of vehicles on the drive through only route. This makes it
difficult to bird as there are few pull-offs that allow other vehicles to
go around you. The most notable birds here are the hundreds of TUNDRA
SWANS covering Grassy Lake. A few dozen SANDHILL CRANES were feeding in
the corn field across the road from the swans.
