Along the lines of the Bald Eagle's feeding habits, I must add an
interesting observation I had a few years ago. I was driving south on hwy
89 just south of Burney Falls here in N. California when on a straight
stretch of road a bald eagle was flying just ahead of us. This continued
for some time with the eagle doing the same speed, when up ahead a gray
squirrel ran into the center of the roadway. There was a car approaching
from the other direction and the eagle dropped right between my vechile and
the approaching vehicle from the other direction and nabbed the squirrel
from the road and lifted off just before we arrived. A few years later I
related the story to a person giving a presentation on bald eagles at our
audubon meeting and he said that eagle had been doing that for years in the
same location and once was hit by a car and had to be rehibilitated.
Finally his luck ran out and he was killed by a vehicle.
