The Columbia Gorge Audubon Society conducts early and late winter raptor
surveys in the Columbia Hills, Klickitat County, Washington. This year's
Late Winter Survey will take place on February 5. Meet at the Lyle Cafe
at 7:00 a.m. Contact Stuart Johnston: sflj at yahoo.com or Dennis White:
oakridge at gorge.net

Participants drive the roads making frequent stops to scan the skies,
utility poles, fence posts, etc. With increased participation we hope to
deploy hikers in the wooded draws to better survey accipiters. With
growing interest in these surveys we also hope to expand to owling.

Last year's Late Winter Survey results: Bald Eagle, 18; N. Harrier, 65;
Sharp-shinned Hawk, 1; accipiter sp., 5; Red-tailed Hawk, 70;
Rough-legged Hawk, 20; buteo sp., 5; Golden Eagle, 13; A. Kestrel, 38;
Prairie Falcon, 10; Peregrine Falcon, 2; falcon sp., 4; hawk sp., 11;
eagle sp., 3; Barn Owl, 3; Total 268. This year's Early Winter Raptor
Survey turned up a record 57 Rough-legged Hawks.
