This is a great subject for story telling.
I have witnesssed a number of attacks by Bald Eagles on Pheasants and other
Birds.
Jan 1996 I was standing in the cattails at Haynes Point, at dawn. Haynes
Point is situated on Osoyoos Lake in the Okanagan Valley, British Columbia.
A Bald eagle was circling. First one Ring-necked Pheasant (50 ft away) then
two others, more distantly began to give their alarm calls. I turned on my
tape recorder and my wife and I waited for the drama to unfold. The eagle
could be heard calling before it turned and made a long low diving attack
into the cattails. The dead cattails were about ten feet high so we were not
able to witness the outcome from this encounter. The eagle disappeared for
some time. The recording is preserved on "Bird Songs of the Okanagan" 1996.
In addition to the two birds you can hear the wind in the cattails.
