Neither. It is a heavily urbanized but as yet unincorporated bit of Pierce
County. An initiative has been underway for the past couple of years to
incorporate Spanaway and the neighboring Parkland area under the perfectly
awful name of Gateway.

I used to bird the Pacific Lutheran University campus in Parkland when I
attended there, but it's pretty slim pickin's for a one-time visit. I have
heard that the forested area near the Sprinker entertainment complex is nice,
but I never made it there myself.
