Subject: WA's poor open space ranking

Hi all, Sorry I wasn't able to check tweeters for two days. To answer Dale's
question, the statement that Washington has a poor record on protecting open
space, only 29th among states, is from a study by the Sierra Club. The study
was written up in the Seattle Post Intelligencer on October 5, 1999 and of
course I never investigated the study further as to methodology, credibility
or anything else. The headline was "Sierra Club ranks state low on open
space, urban issues," and the text said, "The national environmental group
ranked Washington 29th among states in programs to protect open spaces and
31st in revitalizing urban areas." The state was ranked high, 5th, in growth
management. The rest of the text went on to discuss growth management and a
rebuttal of the report by the Bellevue based Center for the Defense of Free
Enterprise but never returned to the subject of open space. Thanks for the
inquiry and best wishes!
