Columbia Estuary Report - 01/30/2000

There were 6 TREE SWALLOWS at Warrenton Sewage Ponds, probably
early spring arrivals. And there are still plenty of ORANGE-
CROWNED WARBLERS around.

I took a trip out around Brownsmead, mostly to count raptors.
a stiff (25-30km) wind was blowing from the ESE and it started
to rain at about 0930. Goose season is now, mostly, over and
large numbers of CACKLING CANADA GEESE can be seen (at least
two yellow collars, T.H2 and C._E). A GREATER WHITE-FRONTED
GOOSE was with a flock at Aldrich Pt Rd. 11 GREATER YELLOWLEGS
were working a plowed field at the easst end of Blind Slough.

Hawk numbers were disappointing (probably because of the wind),
but I saw a MERLIN and the dark, dark-phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK
among the RED-TAILS, NORTHERN HARRIERS and BALD EAGLES.
