Hi Tweeters. Yesterday (6/30) Carol Schulz and I went to see the Ovenbird
and possibly Three-toed and Black-backed Woodpeckers. The road to the
Ovenbird was very productive, and we saw and heard many MacGillivray's
Warblers and a few LAZULI BUNTINGS. When we got to the Ovenbird location near
Packwood at 9:00 AM, the bird was silent. We waited for an hour. At 10:00 AM
I saw the OVENBIRD up in a tree, but it quickly disappeared. The bird was
still not singing. I kept hearing a squeaking noise from back in the woods,
so we went back there and found a RED-BREASTED SAPSUCKER feeding it's babies
in a well-hidden cavity. After waiting a while longer and not getting any
other views and not hearing the Ovenbird, we headed to White Pass Campground.
We parked at camp site #8. We hung around the site for a little bit and soon
a WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER flew to a dead tree with some potential nesting
holes in it. After we watched the sapsucker for a while we headed on the
trail, finding about 6 Chipping Sparrows, some Rufous Hummingbirds, Gray
Jays, and a Pied-billed Grebe across Leach Lake. I heard a woodpecker whinny
that sounded more like HAIRY WOODPECKER than Black-backed or Three-toed. We
walked almost all the trails but struck out on Black-backed and Three-toed
Woodpeckers. We did find a Pileated Woodpecker's excavation in a dead tree.
When we got back to Campsite 8 there was a male and a female WILLIAMSON'S
SAPSUCKER very near the tree with holes in it. The male was courting the
female, with crest raised and white rump flashing. Later the female entered
one of the holes and started enlarging the hole from the inside, just as I
have seen Red-naped and Red-breasted Sapsuckers do. I haven't heard any
reports for these bird at the White Pass CG, has anyone else seen them here?
After that we went back to the Ovenbird location, where the bird was still
silent and was not seen. That's about all. Good Luck and Good Birding.
