Subject: Marymoor Park Report (King Co. WA) 6/28/2000

A belated report here, sorry. Last Wednesday, four of us enjoyed a beautiful
summer morning with plenty of opportunity to see our regular summer breeding
birds.

Not too many highlights, really. At this time of year, few birds are wandering
out of their usual ranges.

We did have obvious young of a number of species:
Canada Goose
Mallard
Red-tailed Hawk
American Robin
Black-capped Chickadee
Downy Woodpecker
Barn Swallow
Bushtit
Song Sparrow
Black-headed Grosbeak
Red-winged Blackbird

This seems to be a good summer for Western Wood-Pewee and Yellow Warbler at
Marymoor, with more than usual numbers seen each week. Vireo numbers are down,
however, with no obvious breeding Cassins or Red-eyed. Warbling Vireo have
been seen easily most weeks, although not this week. Swainson's Thrush numbers
are good, Black-headed Grosbeak numbers are OK. Willow Flycatcher numbers may
be lower than in some years. I don't have the time right now to do any
statistical analysis on these -- I'm just giving my impressions. It does seem,
however, that populations vary widely year-to-year.

The female AMERICAN KESTREL was observed again near the presumed nest snag. I
hope they are doing OK with the Heritage Festival going on this weekend, and
with the fireworks on Tuesday.

I will be gone for all of July, but others (Brian Bell, Joyce Meyer, etc)
should be filling in for me. See you in August.
