Butterfly Census
Neawanna Transect
Seaside, Clatsop Co OREGON

06 July 2000 1210h to 1340hr
temp 64F; wind NW 0-5; 60%sun

Method: Follows the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme described in
Pollard and Yates (1993, Monitoring Butterflies for Ecology and
Conservation. Chapman Hall, London.). A 1.4km transect was
divided into 10 sections. All butterflies, odonata and selected
day-moth species seen within 5m of the transect line are counted
and recorded. The aggregate count follows:

Veined White 4
Ctenucha walsinghami 2

Blue-eyed Darner 3
Eight-spotted Skimmer 11
Variegated Meadowhawk 2
Cardinal Meadowhawk 1
Tule Bluet 163
Pacific Forktail 6
Western Forktail 5

Notes: Butterfly numbers were disappointing today. TULE
BLUET is apparently a newly recorded species for Clatsop Co.
(mostly because little odonata work has been done in the county).
As I am still learning my odonata and, I cannot be certain of
previous counts of Northern Bluet. These counts were based on
the county list which only shows Northern Bluet. All past counts
of Northern Bluet have been down graded to Enllagma sp.until I
can confirm them at the Neawanna.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
