Diann and Tweeters,

The following observation, even though it was made several years
ago in Saskatchewan-- not in Washington-- may be of interest to some
of you.

In the first week of October 1992, I was attending a conference in
Saskatoon, Saskatchewan. During some free time, I was walking across
one of the several large bridges that span the South Saskatchewan
River in Saskatoon. To my surprise, a bat, which was almost certainly
a Red Bat (Lasiurus borealis), flew out from under the bridge and
headed southward. I had not expected to see a bat in broad daylight,
especially in October.

My surprise turned to astonishment when a Peregrine Falcon
appeared out of nowhere, snatched the bat out of the air, and headed
for a tall building in the downtown core, where it landed with its
prey. I was told later that reintroduced Peregrine Falcons had been
nesting on this same building for a couple of years.

I'm not sure how often Peregrines kill bats, but if anyone else
has seen a Peregrine kill a bat in broad daylight in October in
Canada, I'd be surprised!
