Could this be the first sighting of Black-backed Woodpeckers in Lewis County? I received the photos back of the Black-backed Woodpeckers that Patrick took on the 8th of July in the burn near White Pass, with one nest with young calling. The adult was calling higher up in the tree, with food in its bill, but would not come lower as Patrick was standing close to the nestsite.There was a total of 5 Black-backed Woodpeckers in the burn that day, but only one active nest found. I looked at our WA Breeding Bird Atlas, and saw NO breeding records in Lewis County. This area lies in the Goat Rocks Wilderness Area, as a sign on a tree indicated that information. The Mountain Bluebirds were quite nice, and different looking in a burn, which reminded me on the birds along FR 39, south of Long Swamp in Okanogan County, where we encountered them.This species is listed as confirmed breeding from the Lewis County site, and if I return to the burn I will mark the area, where you enter so one can find there way back on the trail, after birding the burn. An entire day can be spent exploring the burn, and to locate nesting sites.
