Saddle Mountain, Clatsop Co. 7/12/2000

Steve Warner and I took advantage of the clear skies and warm
temperatures to count butterflies on Saddle Mt (the one in Clatsop
Co.). The BLUE GROUSE were still booming. We saw 2 (possibly as
many as four) CALLIOPE HUMMINGBIRDS along with many (mostly hatch
year) RUFOUS HUMMINGBIRDS. Two adult BALD EAGLES appear to be on
territory near the east peak. HERMIT WARBLERS were numerous.

Wildflowers were incredible. I usually go earlier in the year
and so saw many flower species I had not seen there before.

Butterflis and Dragonflies were counted on the way down and totals
follow:

Clodius Parnassian 31
Pale Swallowtail 3
Anise Swallowtail 4
Veined White 15
Western Meadow Fritillary 10

C?nurgina c?rulea 1
Drasteria sp 38

Blue-eyed Darner 3
American Emerald(?).......... 1
unknown dragonfly 4

Unidentified dragonflies were seen on the steep grassy slopes
well off trail and I'm not practiced enough to ID them from a
distance with binoculars. The tentative AMERICAN EMERALD was
a well observed all dark individual with no lateral markings.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
