It seems too early for nighthawks to be heading south. I don't know what
their usual practice is out here, but on the east coast you could almost set
your calendar by them: they'd start moving in the last few days of August
and would peak in the first couple of days in September. You could count
a couple hundred a night over almost any coastal city. A few days later
and they were nowhere to be found.

Tweetlanders: Yesterday at around 7 p.m. on the road into Cheney from
the freeway and on the Cheney-Spokane road (in the vicinity of Cheney) we
saw many common nighthawks flying around the tree tops. Are they heading
south already? At first glance one thinks killdeer, but the nighthawk
flight is even more distinctive and the white underwing patch is a dead
