Tweets, I went with my husband on his route today as he was feeling ill. In a
very active yard I heard what sound like the pic of a hairy woodpecker, but
rather soft in comparision to my hairies, but the rattle was straight and, so
I got out my binos and found, a 'hairy woodpecker', with a roufous crown, as
it would be found on the three toed, or Blk Backed. Unfortunately I did not
have a field guide with me, and I watched the bird for a long time, and now I
wonder about the other markings that could be different. Has it ever been
documented that the hairy has indeed bred with three toed or black backed. And
is ther anyone who can go to the area and try to get a look or a photo? If
this is a common occurance excuse my ignorance, But I know I have never heard
it mentioned or have I ever read about such a thing...Directions follow. Please
let me know of any findings etc anyone has on this bird. The area is all
homes, and lots of trees, and lots of other birds. This one was checking out
the suet feeder in a back yard, so it seems to be residential.....
Take Hwy 3 to Silverdale(this is direction from the south)Take the
Newberry Hill exit turning right at the stop going east on Silverdale Way,
until you get to Buckling Hill Road.(texaco Station is on the corner).
Turn left or west on Bucklin Hill Road, go through a light and then you come
to a stop sign. Turn R on Anderson Hill Rd. Continue up Anderson Hill Rd. to
Leeway Avenue(its just after Sirocco Circle). Turn R on Leeway Ave, and at
the intersection of Leeway and Jetty is where I found the bird, in the yard at
the first house on the right just after Jetty. Street number is 1047? Leeway
Ave. Good luck, and let me know what you find. I did tap a couple of rocks
together, and both a 'Hairy' and a Downy came to see what was up.......Vicki
