Peter Harrison's Seabirds has about 37 color illustrations of the five
species of Frigatebirds (pages 126-127) plus a number of B&W
illustrations with descriptive texts (Pages 307-3l7) That should help
him keying it out.

I'm familiar with only the Greater and Lesser species. Had hundreds and
hundreds of the Greater in the Hawaiian Islands National Wildlife Refuge
in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands which I managed for 9 years. The
Hawaiian name for them was IWA which means thief because of their habit
of harassing boobies until the latter dropped their fish which the
Frigates would swoop down and grab before the fish hit the water. When
they were displaying in their courtship antics, their inflated gular
pouches looked like red balloons all over the various islands.

Lessers were scattered all over the west Pacific Islands.

Ah, memories.
