Subject: YELLOW RAIL HABITAT IN WASHINGTON: CALISPELL LAKE?

Last summer in mid June I spent several hours at dusk and later on the west
edge of Kalispell Lake listening specifically for Yellow Rails. I got
permission to cross the fence down to the edge of the marshy lake margin.
Lots of Sora's and snipes calling, nighthawks, etc., but no Yellow Rails.
Another possible spot, though not large, is a sedge marsh in northern Douglas
County between Bridgeport and Leahy Junction along SR 17 at, I believe, the
Hayes Rd. junction. My experience (very limited) with them in Manitoba is
that they may not call until it is good and dark, that is, about 11 PM at our
latitude.
