Mike and Tweeters,

To the best of my knowledge, Common Poorwills are unknown as a
breeder (and not expected to breed) west of the Cascade crest in
Washington. There may be a few records of migrants (Russell R., can
you help us here?) on the west side. It seems more likely to me that
your friends mistook something else for a Poorwill. However, nothing
is impossible, and these reports should be checked out if feasible.

Magpies are likewise unknown as a breeding species west of the
Cascades, although by comparison with B.C., there are likely some
records of wanderers outside the breeding season. However, as magpies
are sometimes kept as pets, the possibility of a westside magpie being
an escape from captivity is high.
