This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, July 21 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

On Sun Jul 16 Harold Ward tallied 34 species at Coyote Grade south of
Genesee, Nez Perce Co, ID, including BEWICK'S WREN, GRASSHOPPER SPARROW, and
CHUKAR. The easiest way to get there is take US 95/US 12 east from Lewiston
and then follow US 12 toward Orofino. Just after you leave US 95, at US 12
milepost 11.1, turn north onto Coyote Gulch Road (aka Nez Perce Co Road 170)
and follow it up the hill. One of the birdiest spots starts about 2.5 miles
up the grade. ID DeLorme 54, A-1 and check A Birder's Guide to Idaho p 81
for a map and description.

At Mann Lake, about 3 miles east of the Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce Co, ID,
on Wed Jul 19 was a nice mess of shorebirds according to Bryan Jamison. The
best bird was a single SHORT-BILLED DOWITCHER. Other species included
GREATER and LESSER YELLOWLEGS, LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER, WILSON'S and
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE, and SPOTTED, WESTERN, SEMIPALMATED, BAIRD'S and LEAST
SANDPIPERS. From the north end of Lewiston, follow US 12 West into town,
cross the Clearwater River and immediately take the first left toward East
Lewiston. Turn left again onto East Main Street and follow it about 0.5 mile
to the blinking yellow lights. Turn right onto Lapwai (aka Lindsay Creek)
Road. When the road forks stay right on Lindsay Creek. When Lindsay Creeks
ends at Grelle Avenue, turn left onto Grelle, and just after Grelle makes a
sharp right turn, turn left onto Powers Avenue. Follow Powers about 1 mile,
straight past the grain towers, to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54, A-1 and A

a call to the hotline. Keep in mind beginners are eager to find any birds
