I finally found some time to go check out the Bobwhite sighting over in the
Stillwater unit of the Snoqualmie Valley Wildlife Recreation area. I went
with Derek Mahaffey who had been there a week ago and heard the NOBO but
didn't see it. We went in at the second access north of Stillwater. After
going by the meadow on the left we walked along a wooded area that separates
the two meadows. Almost immediately, we heard the bird calling from within
the trees. We tracked it down and when it stopped calling I played a bobwhite
tape and it would begin responding again. We finally pinned it down to a
small area and stopped to look around. We found it perched on a tree limb
about 10-12' off the ground. We watched it about five minutes before it flew
off. As we were walking back on the trail, another bird flew up from the
other side of some blackberry bushes and landed on the trail about 40-50'
ahead of us. This gave us more excellent looks at it feeding on the trail. It
was a life bird for both of us and, it turned out to be my 300th WA state
bird.
