Butterfly Census
Nicolai Mt Survey Route
Clatsop Co OREGON

29 July 2000 1240h to 1425hr
temp 70F; wind NW 0-5; 70%sun

Method: Follows the Butterfly Monitoring Scheme described in
Pollard and Yates (1993, Monitoring Butterflies for Ecology and
Conservation. Chapman Hall, London.). Eight 150m transects were
walked along the survey route. All butterflies, odonata and
selected day-moth species seen within 5m of the transect line
are counted and recorded. The aggregate count follows:

Clodius Parnassian 2
Hydapse Fritillary 15
Western Meadow Fritillary 10
California Tortoiseshell 4
Red Admiral 1
Lorquin's Admiral 4

C?nurgina c?rulea 1
Rheumaptera hastata 8

Blue-eyed Darner 1
Aeshna sp. 2
unknown dragonfly 1

NOTES: A beautiful, warm day on Nicolai Mt. I suspect the low
numbers of swallowtails and Dragonflies may reflect an interrum
between lifecycles. Three MYLITTA CRESCENTS were seen off
transect on the Greasy Spoon Mainline between Nicolai Mt and
Birkenfeld. DEER FLIES are getting pretty wicked, too.

Mike Patterson Alas, to wear the mantle of Galileo,
Astoria, OR it is not enough to be persecuted
celata at pacifier.com by an unkind establishment,
you must also be right.
