Hi Tweets -

About a month ago some tweetsters were inquiring about Dark-eyed Juncos.
We have had a pair nesting in one of our hanging fuschia baskets. We
have been actively scolded by the parents whenever we tried to get in to
get a little water to that basket. It has been neat watching the
strategies used by the parents when bringing food back to the young.
Because there is not a lot of the normal lower story vegetation around
the route involve flying into the patio area, perching on various
objects there, then a roundabout route to either the potting bench or
the handle of a garden cart, and finally up to the nest. Last Wednesday
(the 26th) two active youngsters fledged, still showed slight traces of
down.

During this last week, we have had a couple of male Rufous Hummingbirds
coming into the fuschia and begonia baskets. Hummers have been scarce
for the last three weeks or so. Typical male behaviour, with one being
very possessive of the flowers.

Good birding,
