It's too hot outside so thought I'd type this up in a nice, cool setting
inside :-) (how many times can we ever say that here!!?). I am no longer
"gleaning" birds out of general lists posted to Tweeters if there is no
particular information such as number, where seen, etc. It is much
appreciated of those who do specifically mention turkey vultures - they may
be ordinary, they may look ugly to some, but they're the only vultures
we've got!!!

Following are turkey vultures reported from Washington, British Columbia,
and Oregon during May 2000:

02 -- 1 at Reifel Refuge; 2 copulating at Watmaugh Bay on Lopez Island - 3
others in the air at Lopez; 1 northeast of Sequim
03 -- 1 from the Brady Loop Road
04 -- two separate groups of 18+ over Puget Island; 8 north of Cape Horn
(east of Puget Island)
05 -- 5+ from the I-5 corridor between Portland and Eugene, Oregon; kettle
of 8 south of Carnation; 2 riding a thermal north of Sechelt, B.C.
06 -- 2 east of Sequim; 1 at Lost Mountain; 11 between Klickitat and
Goldendale
07 -- 1 at Gibsons, B.C.; 1 checking out a carcass near Pender Harbour,
B.C.; 1 above Madeira Park, B.C.; 2 near Trout Lake, B.C.; 3 along Wenslow
Slough; 2 near Bottle Beach1 at top of Dog Mountain (Clark County); 1 over
Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver, B.C.; 1 on the road shoulder having
lunch at Bay Center; 1 flying northwest of Naselle
09 -- 11 near Castlegar (southcentral B.C.)
10 -- 1 cruising down the West Sammamish Parkway; 2 at Louis Lake near
Kamloops, B.C.
13 -- 2 at Forsberg Farm (Clallam County); 10 circling between Kaleden and
Penticton, B.C.; 10 near Agassiz, B.C.; Yakima Valley Audubon Society
Birdathon: 4 at White Pass, 2 at Satus/Byron Ponds, 4 at East Toppenish
NWR, 8 at Grandview/SE Yakima City, 19 at West Toppenish NWR, 1 at Priest
Rapids Lake, 1 at The Nile Area/Chinook, and 8 at White Pass. (Total
vulture count was 47.)
14 -- 5 drifting low over the Carnation Marsh; 2 at Agassiz, B.C.
18 -- 13 circling over Happy Valley (south of Sequim); 11 soaring into the
Wiltse Flat roost in Penticton, B.C.
19 -- 7 circling high in the sky over Dungeness; 1 near Boston Bar on the
Fraser River, B.C.; 3 following a black bear across the railroad tracks in
Yale, B.C.; 1 circling over Moon Road near Gates
20 -- 1 at Nicomen Slough near Mission, B.C.; 6 at North Bend, B.C.; 29 on
the Yakama Res near White Swan
21 -- 2 west of Joyce; 2 near Hood Canal
23 -- 2 at Fortston Mills near Darrington; 3 south of Stanwood
24 -- 2 soaring over a seaside bluff, Point Roberts
25 -- 1 near Mossyrock
27 -- 1 at treetop level east of Chinook Pass; 1 at Snoqualmie Pass
29 -- 1 northwest of Fall City; 3 from I-5; 1 at Ridgefield; 1 at
Ridgefield River Unit; 2 at Ridgefield Carty Unit; 1 east of Packwood; 1
near Eatonville; 1 over a pasture at 340/Mountain Highway
30 -- 1 three miles west of Rochester
31 -- 3 over Sequim; 2 east of Sequim
