Hi Tweets,
I am hoping to go overnight backpacking up Umptanum Canyon this
weekend (to see birds of course!) before it gets too hot there. I
have only been a little ways into it, and am hoping to get some
additional information before I trek into the unknown (to me). For
example:

Is this BLM land or forest service land or a wildlife preserve?

Can one backpack without a permit?

If a permit is needed, where would I get one?

Can I leave my car at the trailhead?

I am not too familiar with the terrain and landscape there. Should I be
on the lookout for rattlesnakes??!

Are there any websites with good information on this specific area, for
birding or trails or whatever?

Is there a short detour I could take on my way to the trailhead that
would give me a good chance of seeing a Williamson's Sapsucker?

Thanks SO MUCH for taking the time to respond with an answer to ANY of
these questions. Wish me luck on the Lazuli Bunting and Yellow-breasted
Chat!!
