This is Dave Holick with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington
/Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday June 9 (2000). This hotline,
sponsored by Palouse Audubon, is updated every Friday evening.

On June 8 Robert Bond reported having seen and photographed a BLACK-LEGGED
KITTIWAKE, from the pier on his property located near Coolin, Idaho on the
south end of Priest Lake. On June 3 he observed and photographed a male
BALTIMORE ORIOLE in the same vicinity. He reports that the oriole has been
seen or heard daily since then. It is suggested you contact him at (208)
443-2960 for more specific details. Coolin, Idaho is found on DeLorme page
62 between A & B - 1. If documented and accepted, according to the Idaho
Bird Distribution, these birds would be first ever for this Latilong.

The BLACK-THROATED SPARROWS seen at the summit of Steptoe Butte, Washington,
have been observed my a number of birders. They were first reported by David
Mann on June 1, and were last reported as being seen by Tom & Diane Weber on
June 4. They reported seeing them from the east side of the parking lot at
the top of the butte. The male seems to be singing on territory and has been
seen with a female. Birders are asked to not use tape recorders to illicit
response from them. Washington DeLorme page 73 D (Dowitcher) 6. This may be
a first for this species in Whitman County.

The 3 male HARLEQUIN DUCKS reported earlier by Charles Swift on the Lochsa
River at milepost 139 on Idaho Highway 12, were last reported as being seen
on June 3 by Keith Carlson. The ducks are being seen on or near a gravel bar
near that location. Idaho DeLorme page 56 A 1.

A GREAT EGRET was reported by Keith Carlson at Mann's Lake on June 5, but
there have been no subsequent reports. 13 WHITE-FACED IBIS were reported
there on the morning of June 7 by Bryan Jamison. He also reported 4 on June
4. 8 FRANKLIN GULLS were reported there on the evening of June 6 by Charles
Swift. Mann's Lake is east of Lewiston, Idaho DeLorme page 54 A 1.

BURROWING OWLS reported earlier by the Canyon Birders were seen again by Tom
and Diane Weber on June 4. A total of 6 birds were seen approximately 1 mile
west of LaCrosse, Washington on the airport road Delorme page 56 B
(Bobolink) 1. 4 adults were reported on the fence line at Camp Memorial
Park, and another pair was ? mile farther west.

A WHITE-HEADED WOODPECKER was seen by Keith Carlson on June 5 at Field s
Spring State Park, Washington DeLorme page 43 D (Dowitcher) 7. They were
reported as being on Puffer Butte above the parking lot there. On the same
tree he also saw a Pileated Woodpecker and a female Hairy Woodpecker.

The PEREGRINE FALCONS are reported nesting again, and now feeding young in
the vicinity of where they nested the last 3 years, just west of downtown
Spokane, according to David Mann. The nest is under the Sunset Boulevard
bridge where it crosses Hangman Creek, also know as Latah Creek. Washington
DeLorme page 89 C 5.

A BARN OWL was found on June 5 by Bryan Jamison on the Old Sprial Highway, 1
? to 2 miles below the top where it leaves Highway 95 north of Lewiston,
Idaho. He said it was across the road from a clump of Cottonwood trees with
broken tops. See DeLorme page 54 A 1 in the corner of the map.

Good Birding.
