D Canning writes: "The notable observation was a Ring-billed Gull
kiting on the wind like a tern, repeatedly plunging and diving below
the surface, catching fish, and apparently eating them on the wing. Is
this kind of behavior common with gulls?"

I've noticed the same behavior a few times in Commencement Bay this
year and last. Not the norm, but I have witnessed it. Perhaps some
gulls are learning a trick or two from the Terns? Hypothesis anyone?
