I conducted the monthly census on the Steigerwald Lake N.W.R. in Clark
County on June 22nd. I found 59 species, nothing special but the
highlights were:
5 BLUE-WINGED TEAL
1 AMERICAN BITTERN
5 VIRGINIA RAIL
1 SORA
1 GREAT HORNED OWL
2 YELLOW-HEADED BLACKBIRDS.
The Yellow-headed Blackbirds used to be a nesting species about 20 years
ago until draining of the wetlands by the previous landowner destroyed
most of the cattails, the USF&WS is restoring the wetlands and hopefully
these birds will re-colonize this spot.
