Thanks to those who responded to my request for ant links. I asked because
I have ants running around my front porch industriously trying to clear away
anything I plant near the porch. They seem to be living in the crevice
between the concrete porch and the concrete basement. Their enthusiasm for
maintaining a vegetation-free zone is annoying, but tolerable. My main
concern is that they might be carpenter ants actually living in the wooden
walls of the house rather than the concrete crevices.

Dick Johnson gave me a WSU publication on identifying ants in Washington.
I'll report back on the ants when I figure out what they are.

To relate this to birds, if I could figure out a way to point the Flickers
to the porch for an easy lunch.......
