I have put "collars" or blocks of wood with the smallest possible holes over
the entrance to commercail nestboxes to keep out the house sparrows and
they are 7/8 inch in diameter. Anything bigger and the sparrows will get in.
We have raised chicadees in these boxes and they can get in and out just
fine We also put metal guards in the roof to keep the sparrows from
perching there and hassling the chickadees trying to get in.
