More about gull territorial behavior:
Two Glaucous-winged Gulls, one's beak clamped firmly over the other's,
whirled and cartwheeled straight down into the water by the Ballard Bridge.
After a big splash, the beak-lock was broken, and the two then took turns
trying to climb on top of each other, thrashing and flapping in the water
for over a minute before one broke away, flapped across a few feet of water,
and flew off.
I've always loved Walt Whitman's description of cartwheeling eagles: "a
living, fierce, gyrating wheel, four beating wings, two beaks......"
Technically, I guess the gulls fit this description, but it somehow :-)
lacked the visual impact of eagles.
