Last year I served as a volunteer guide at the Audubon Rowe Sanctuary
during the crane spectacle. I can only echo Richard's, GO NOW.

Let me add some of my thoughts. The Sandhills staging their migration
through the Platte River are Lesser Sandhill Cranes. The ones we enjoy
here in the west are the Greater subspecies. The big white cranes Richard
was searching for usually come late in the migration...we chased two
reports of Whooping Cranes the 3rd of April and got good looks at both
pair. Also, there is always the outside chance that a Common Crane will be
in the hoard of Sandhills, as was the case last spring.

The Rowe Sanctuary is a great place to visit during your communion with the
cranes. It is about 20 miles ESE of Kearney, south of I80, take the Gibbon
exit (#285) and follow the signs. They will know the latest on any rare
crane sightings and a sunrise or sunset in the blind on the Platte is well
worth the modest cost.
