This is Kas Dumroese with the Northern Idaho / Eastern Washington /
Northeastern Oregon bird hotline for Friday, Mar 3 (2000). This hotline,

Today Mar 3, the LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL was seen at the Walla Walla River
delta in western Walla Walla Co WA by Mike and MerryLynn Denny and Mark
Houston. Also at the delta was a MEW GULL and a WESTERN X GLACOUS hybrid,
and 230 or so DUNLIN. The delta is just north of the jct of US 12 and US
730. Park in the pullout on the west side of the road just opposite the
entrance to Madame Dorianne Park. About 4.5 miles north of the delta this
past week, near US 12 milepost 300, has been a big flock of SNOW GEESE with
1 to 3 ROSS'S GEESE mixed in. Check the display pond at McNary NWR HQ as the
ROSS'S were seen there on Mar 1. Mike and MerryLynn also report the Snow
Goose flock was being harassed by a PEREGRINE FALCON earlier in the week. WA

Presumably the same GREAT GRAY OWL seen earlier in February near the
Pullman/Moscow airport was seen again on Feb 29 just north of Moscow, Latah
Co ID. The bird was at Doug Rudolph's, 4381 Estes Road, just across the
stateline in WA. From Moscow, go north on US 95 about 3 miles, left onto
Estes, right at the fork, about 2.5 miles total from US 95. Doug's place is
right at the crest of the first modest hill on the left side of the road.

A BARRED OWL is still roosting at Spalding Park east of Lewiston, Nez Perce
Co ID. Dick Johnson spied the bird again on Feb 29. It's not real regularly
seen, but when seen it's always in about the same spot. To get to the Barred
Owl, head east from Lewiston on US 95 toward Lapwai. Just after crossing the
river, turn left into the Nez Perce historical site and immediately turn
right, heading down hill toward the picnic area. At the stop sign, turn left
and follow the road over the bridge to the grove of trees / cemetery /
picnic area. Park right next to the porta?potty. Head straight toward the
river from the toilet across an open grassy area - there's a line of blue
spruce trees near the river. Check especially the second blue spruce from
the west end, above the fork, about 25' up. ID DeLorme 54, A-1.5.

The LONG-EARED OWL near Mann Lake, east of the Lewiston Orchards, Nez Perce
Co ID, was seen again on Feb 29 by Dick Johnson. The bird roosts in the row
of ponderosa pines along the gravel road leading into the reservoir. Check
all the pines as the bird moves about. Take Powers Avenue east from the
Orchards about 3 miles to the reservoir. ID DeLorme 54 A-1.

A SNOWY OWL was just south of Moses Lake, Grant Co WA this past week
according to Mike and MerryLynn. The bird was at the intersection of 2 SE
and M SE just west of WA 17 about 3 miles due south of the interstate. WA
DeLorme 69 D-7.
