Today Ruth Sullivan and I headed out to the Hoquiam Pond to see if we
could relocate the TUFTED DUCK. We arrived around 9:30am and searched
most of the morning without any luck. Our hi-lites were, 40+ SCAUP
(LESSER and GREATER combined), 6 RUDDY DUCKS, 2 GREATER WHITE FRONTED
GEESE, and other waterfowl. The tide was way out, which could have been
a possible reason why the duck could not be found during the morning
hours.
We made a quick stop at the Johns River Wildlife Area, where our
hi-lites were, 35 elk grazing in the field, 20+ TREE SWALLOWS flying and
1 GREATER YELLOWLEGS.
On the way back, we birded Brady Loop Rd., Chehalis Wildlife Area, and
Blockhouse Road. Hi-lites were, on Brady Loop Rd., we had a pair of
AMERICAN KESTREL's. At the Chehalis Wildlife Area, we had 4 TUNDRA
SWANS, 4 PIED BILLED GREBES, 5 COMMON SNIPE, 6+ YELLOW RUMPED WARBLERS,
and 1 AMERICAN BITTERN. Blockhouse Road turned up 1 AMERICAN KESTREL, 1
SHARP SHINNED HAWK, and 1 PEREGRINE FALCON at Gordons Farm.
Despite the weather, we had 48 species for the day.
